Dentures in Greenpoint, Brooklyn - SMILELOUNGE

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable artificial teeth that last for approximately 5 to 10 years. Greenpoint, Brooklyn dentures are removable so that you can properly clean and care for them and your mouth.

Types of dentures

Depending on how many teeth you need to replace, you may have a couple of options for your dentures.

Complete dentures

Complete dentures in Greenpoint, Brooklyn replace all of your teeth; we usually recommend this option for patients who are missing a lot of teeth or have widespread oral health problems.

If you have any teeth remaining, we’ll remove those teeth before fitting you for dentures. After your tooth extractions, you’ll need to wait for 8 to 12 weeks for your gums and bones to heal before we can create your new dentures. In some cases, we can provide you with immediate provisional dentures that are delivered the same day your remaining teeth are removed. These will allow you to eat and smile while you are healing. Once your bone and gums have healed, we will make you your final set of dentures and your provisional dentures will become your backup set.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are ideal for patients who still have some healthy teeth that they want to keep. Your partial dentures will have artificial teeth that are connected to a plastic base (designed to mimic your gums) that’s attached to a metal frame. This frame clasps onto your existing teeth for stability.

What’s the process like for getting dentures?

We use conventional and digital impressions and 3D printing to ensure that your dentures are a perfect fit for your mouth. You will have a series of appointments that allow us to custom-fit your dentures to your mouth and gums so you can eat and speak comfortably.

What happens after you get dentures?

It’s normal for your mouth, cheek muscles, and tongue to be a little sore or irritated for a few weeks after you start wearing your dentures. You may produce more saliva than normal.

Your muscles and mouth tissues will eventually get used to your dentures. It’s typical to need one to three follow-up visits for adjustments after you get your final dentures. After the initial break-in period, most patients find that dentures are a convenient solution for restoring their smile.

It’s also easy to care for your dentures. Take them out after each meal so you can rinse your mouth and rinse your dentures to remove any food debris. Clean your dentures daily with a soft-bristled brush and a mild dish soap or denture cleaner. Avoid using toothpaste on your dentures as it’s too abrasive and can damage your dentures.

Never sleep with your dentures in. Your gums and jaw must have a chance to rest while your dentures are out overnight. Leaving your dentures in overnight can change your saliva, resulting in dry mouth and a higher risk of getting an oral fungal or yeast infection.

As the shape of your gums and bone change over time, dentures require periodic adjustments and relines to reshape the inside to better fit your jaws. If you notice that your dentures are loose, causing sore spots, or getting food trapped underneath them, an adjustment or reline can get them fitting well again in just one or two visits.
